Latrobe “Wilderness in the City”

This garden embodies the variability of life and ever changing reality we live in today. It provides a refuge to connect with yourself, friends and family, and the natural world that surrounds us. From the upper deck situated outside a cozy office to the unique playhouse for children and adults alike to the lower benches and fire pit lounge, there is room to explore, be still, or chat with a dear friend or neighbor, depending on what the day brings. By simply walking through the landscape from the deck down past the playhouse slide and to the lower bench area you may encounter a butterfly or soaring owl depending on the time of day. Whatever you come across or find within yourself after experiencing this garden is designed to be good for you.

Inspiration was drawn from the kind, calm clients who collaborated with us, harboring a deep sense of presence, peace, and joy when embarking on the design process.

The location of this garden is tucked away on a hillside that is reminiscent of the wild sage scrubland it once was and still is. We chose to bring these native plants back into the landscape when approaching the design and future of the space. There are collections of white sage, buckwheat, hummingbird sage, grasses, and wildflowers planted to support the wild world that exists today, shared with the local owls, coyotes, and hummingbirds.

Due to the different levels on a triangular plot, there were constraints in regards to connecting the spaces. We worked on how to make the space feel unified, yet dynamic and rich. The opportunity arose to work with the natural terracing of the hillside, which revealed a design that incorporates safety and practicality as well as character and vibrance.
