Spending time outside every morning is a wonderful way to connect to nature, your garden and yourself. It is a lovely practice that has been a major part of my life while navigating the stresses of being a small business owner living in a bustling city.
This practice can be as simple as drinking your coffee outside while watching the birds, quiet meditation, morning journaling, or even some weeding (morning workout, anyone?). Though it is simple, the act of breathing fresh morning air and allowing your eyes to look at the early light of the sun is incredibly healthy for your body and its daily rhythms.
This morning garden practice can also be a helpful tool to start thinking about how to design your own garden. If you have an outdoor space and donโt know where to start, consider the kind of experience you want to cultivate there. If that is a place to drink your coffee every morning where you feel comfortable and relaxed, then you can begin by creating a space to nurture this feeling. Perhaps you have one lounge chair and surround it with aromatic plants or privacy plantings to feel safe and enclosed.
This inquiry into how you want to feel when sitting in your garden is a great launching point for the design. Sure one chair and a couple of plants may not transform your entire space, but if it is inviting enough for you to sit outside every morning, that will make a significant impact on your day-to-day life.
