Walgrove “Discover”
Here we had one of those unique experiences where we had a nearly blank slate beginning. Individual garden rooms created by the architecture were already fully formed, and we decided to give each “room” its own flair. In the front, the clients wanted to create a welcoming space for neighbors to stop by and a bit of native lawn for their daughter to play in. We surrounded this lawn with native and climate-appropriate natives, a native redbud, and an avocado tree. The fence is intentionally permeable so the garden can feel like an extension of the neighborhood.
The back garden is broken into four parts. There is the mini fruit tree orchard with herbal groundcover and artichokes. This is where the compost lives and where the clients have a Veggo planting bed. Then we arrive in the firepit lounge with native plantings selected for their muted colors to give the space a serene and unified look. The pink blossom magnolia tree here has space to shine.
We decided to turn up the volume in the back of the property behind the client’s ADU office with a pink statement wall and a textured cobblestone patio. Here the plantings are inspired by nearby Venice Beach, with lots of texture and drama. Giving the space a tropical feel without the thirsty plants and high water needs.
